Over a century of history
Our Story
Built as a substantial stone property for Christopher John Yardley, a prominent local grocer, and his wife Alice. The family home, complete with extensive gardens, greenhouses, and stables, reflected their standing within Royston.
Norman Yardley was born at The Grove. He would go on to captain both Yorkshire and England in the 1930s, cementing the building’s place in local sporting history.
Purchased by Royston Urban District Council, the building served as local government headquarters through reorganisation in 1974, then continued as an outpost of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council until 2005.
Purchased by Royston & Carlton Community Properties through £354,676 of European funding, including £200,000 invested to improve the building fabric and bring it back into productive use for the community.
Community Impact
The Grove is the trading arm of the charity Royston & Carlton Community Partnership, operated by the volunteer-run company Royston & Carlton Community Properties. Every pound generated goes back into the local area.
